About:

Korean-Canadian cellist Soohyun Nam has appeared as soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia Toronto, among others, and performed across North America, Asia, and Europe. Her performances have been broadcast on CBC as well as national broadcasting networks in South Korea. As a musician with a passion for tango, Soohyun has performed with members of Forever Tango and Daniel Binelli, master bandoneónist and member of the Astor Piazzolla's last ensemble, New Tango Sextet. She is the cellist of Amarras, a new tango ensemble based in Toronto, and has appeared at all major international tango festivals in Toronto as well as on tours in Montreal and Calgary. She studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and is based in Toronto. == Soohyun is a Canadian business immigration lawyer at Fragomen, providing immigration services to a range of corporate clients. She helps to connect top talent around the globe with some of the fastest growing areas of the Canadian economy, including innovation and technology, pharmaceutical, engineering, environment, and energy. Soohyun assists clients with internal transfers, employer compliance audits, Labour Market Impact Assessments, and short and long-term immigration strategies for internal and external hires. As a human rights advocate, Soohyun identified a subject for a North Korean defector memoir and facilitated the book’s creation from start to finish. The book, Stars Between the Sun and Moon, has been featured by international media outlets such as The New York Times, and and at the 52nd UN Commission on the Status of Women. Soohyun has been consulted by the media for her experience with Korean-Canadian immigration and refugee issues, and featured in media outlets such as Elle Canada, The Walrus and CBC. Soohyun’s extensive pro bono advocacy experience includes assisting with the first-ever testimonies on North Korean women and children’s rights to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Soohyun serves as the Advisory Lawyer in Canadian immigration law to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto, and has served as an Executive Board Member and Director of Communications for HanVoice, the largest Canadian organization on North Korean human rights issues. In addition to her immigration and advocacy work, Soohyun is a published author and award-winning cellist. Her book of essays and reviews in Korean was the official selection at the 1995 International Book Expo, and designated recommended reading by the Korean Ministry of Culture.
